Monster: An Interpretation; Opening Reception

What if your fate rested in the hands of 12 strangers? What if those strangers would make their decision based on how you looked or what people have said about you? What is the truth, and how do we know it? What is justice, and is it the same for everyone?

These are the questions a group of young men from the Liberty Partnerships Program at Gaskill Prep have been asking and struggling to answer this year. They participated in a discussion-based literacy group that engages them in big-picture critical thinking about literature, their lives, and current events.

Join us for an art show that will explore challenging themes of race, identity, justice, and truth, all through the eyes of a group of Niagara Falls middle school students. The show will present our artists' self-portraits using manipulated media, and the opening will feature spoken word and excerpts from the book "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. Featured artists will also explain their interpretations and connections with works from Langston Hughes and Tupac Shakur. This project was made possible by generous funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and has been facilitated by Niagara County Community College's Liberty Partnerships Program. The opening will take place at 24 Below Art Gallery from 6-9 pm on February 19th. We hope you will attend and continue the conversation with us!

The exhibition will continue to be on display until March 11th.

Dance of the Fireflies: A Happening

  • 24 Below

An amazing all night event surrounding dusk and the emergence of fireflies into the city. The event starts with creating glowing firefly projects at the gallery and then builds into the night's largest happening: the EMERGENCE of the FIREFLIES- as dancers in glowing costume take flight from the gallery in an orchestrated procession through the streets- all are invited to join the procession which will culminate in a choreographed Dance of the Fireflies.

Costumes, models and make up directed by Mary Grace Ohrum. Art projects, dance and participation of procession directed by Danielle Grace-DePalma.

This is the eclectic, bizarre, must see for yourself event that Niagara Falls has been waiting for. See it in it's very first year- the year that all others will build from.

Be at the gallery by 7 for art projects; Be at the gallery by 9pm for the Procession and Dance of the Fireflies.

Sound Experience: Circuit Bending with Schroeder

  • 24 Below

Circuit bending is the creative, chance-based customization of the circuits within electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-poweredguitar effects, children's toys and digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators.

Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling the machine and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit.

Amazing concert experience, $5/door, cash bar (wine & beer only).

Intuitive Painting Workshop

  • 24 Below

From the web: "ntuitive Process Painting is painting without limits. We are all inherently creative and long to create. But often we are taught that in order to be creative we must have some sort of skill or talent that produces something good enough to be called “Art”. This belief can cause one to be too afraid to explore the creative process even though deep down their soul yearns to express itself."

Intuitive Painter Heather Upaela Johnson leads this class in a discovery experience of painting an abstract on canvas from your intuition- without limits. All of the supplies and tools are provided.

Absolutely no experience is necessary for this therapeutic and relaxing excursion into creativity. Please join us!

Class fee is $35. Reservations are required.

Advance online reservations are required. Please click here to reserve.
